A good massage affects you on all levels of your being.
Physically, its benefits include relaxing and toning your muscles; assisting the venous
flow of blood; soothing the nervous system; encouraging the lymphatic flow; and
stretching the connective tissue of joints.
On a mental level, massage not only relieves stress and anxiety, it also
helps you to become more conscious of your body as a whole, of the parts that
you are in touch with and of those that feel "cut off". Once you are
aware of where your energy blocks lie, you can begin to try and integrate your
body and, in developing a more positive self-image, take responsibility for
your own happiness and health.
A caring massage creates feelings of
well-being, trust and joy. On a spiritual
level, the benefits of massage are hard to describe, but is not uncommon during
a massage for both giver and receiver to attain a state of heightened
awareness, of "presence in the moment", that is akin to the
experience of meditation.
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue
structures of the muscle and fascia. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same
movements and techniques as Swedish or relaxation massage, but the pressure will generally be
more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works
to release chronic muscle tension or knots. It's
important to drink a lot of water after a deep tissue massage to help flush
lactic acid out of the tissues. If you don't, you might be sore the next day. It's
possible that you might feel some soreness the day after a deep tissue massage
even if you DO drink water. This just means a lot of waste products were
flushed out of the tissues. It should pass within a day or so. Hot
Stone Massage is a style of massage therapy in which water-treated stones are
placed at specific sites on the client's body to promote relaxation. Muscles
are massaged with the heated stones to allow the therapist to more easily
perform deep tissue manipulations. Cool stones are sometimes used alternately
with hot stones.
Massage during pregnancy offers many
undeniable physical benefits. A skilled massage therapist
can work to relieve the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such
as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, joint pain, and edema. In
addition, by relaxing nervous tension, you can experience a better night’s
sleep. Keeping your muscles loose and your body flexible makes for an easier
delivery as well.
